9 Simple Tips to Get Into the Savings Habit

Many people find it hard to save, even when they've cut spending and got their finances under control. However, somehow by the end of the week, the money just seems to have vanished. But don't despair; let me show you some simple tips for making saving that little bit easier.

Set a savings goal

Don't just promise to save 'as much as I can' or 'anything extra'. Decide on a real amount, per week, per month or per day.

Save first from your wages every week

Put savings first. As soon as you get your wages, take out the amount you plan on saving and put it straight in the bank.

Set up a direct debit into your savings account

Most banks are happy to provide this service and it's simple to set up. Choose how much money you want to transfer and put it straight into your savings account - you won't miss it!

Save the change in your pocket or wallet every day

When you get home at the end of the day, get into the habit of dumping any extra coins into a jar. At the end of the month, count the coins. If they add up to less than $20, add some extra money and put $20 into your savings account.

Save $1 each working day of the month

Most people have 20 working days each month. So if you drop $1 into a jar each day when you return home, by the end of the month, you'll have saved $20.

Tie your spending to saving

Each time you buy an impulsive treat for yourself, your partner or your child, put exactly the same amount into your savings account. By the end of the month, you may be surprised to find how much extra you've saved.

Set aside gifts for saving

If you get a gift of money, for a birthday or holiday, or an end-of-year bonus from your company, save it. And if your children get gifts of money, make a rule that they will save at least a part of their money, too.

Dedicate your next pay rise to savings

Next time you get a rise, start putting the difference into your savings account. You'll never miss the money, since you never had it to begin with!

Reward yourself for saving

For example, if you save as planned for a month, you might let yourself spend $20 on an item of clothing. After saving for three months, you might spend $50 on a day in the country, and so on. But don't start giving yourself treats 'because I tried really hard', or 'because I almost made my savings goal'.
